The Mariana Trench

They were experiencing earthquakes in the Mariana Trench at 4000 ft down and eddys at 14000 ft down. That trench is about 35,000ft down, give or take. I know once you have a somewhat "fantasy" movie like this, science is up to interpretation, but that was something someone could've done 2 seconds of research to get right.

Anyhow, this is one of my favorite "journey to the center of the earth" movies.

You do understand what a "trench" is, right? You don't need to be at the valley floor to get hit by an avalanche. They were next to the side of the trench and rocks were cascading down the slope of the trench. And it wasn't an eddy. It was a whirlpool. The trench is a subduction zone. As one plate slides under the other, it draws water with it. This displaced fluid needs to be replenished. Water flowing down into the trench will cause currents and whirlpools.

It was dumb to launch from the middle of an ocean anyway. Is the complexity involved really worthwhile for a couple mile headstart on a 4000 mile trip?
