When they fall through empty space into the crystal chamber (spoilers)

Why didn't they simply keep the laser on when they fell and just cut through the crystals and keep on truckin'?

I think one of the crystals got stuck in the impeller and made the laser stop working.

That was after they fell and landed. I'm talking about when they broke through and started falling - the laser was turned off then for some reason. If it were still turned on, they could have just melted the floor on which the crystals lay and kept on going.

Watched it again last night. It looks like they turned it off because they didn't need it to go through the liquid of the mantle.

another plot hole is that they fell like 100 meters without any device to soften the impact.

Wouldnt they crash like an car falling to a canyon? therefore you know....killing them all in the process.

Oh, because gravity is lighter toward the center of the earth. It's like standing in the middle of a merry-go-round compared to the outside.

If the lasers were off for any reason, ONE of the those highly-educated scientists should have deduced that the laser needed to be back on as soon as the realized it was empty space.

The MOST IMPLAUSIBLE thing about that scene is that they came in crashing at an ANGLE like an airplane. For the length of time it took them to finally come to a complete stop, we know that they entered the chamber extremely fast. Once they entered the chamber, they were in free fall and since it had no wings or anything on its shell to generate Drag, it should have quickly reached terminal velocity. And they were drilling STRAIGHT DOWN to the core. They had the ability to make minute shift adjustments but they couldn't pull a hard left. The nose of the ship should have smashed head first into the ground and everyone have turned into goo.
