Kinnear was robbed at Oscar time
I was watching this film for the third time yesterday and it always amazes me the strength of Kinnear's performance, cast against type. Kinnear probably gives the performance of his career portraying a selfish, self-destructive sex addict who is also strangely likable and sympathetic at the same time. He is able to channel Bob Crane's "what-me-worry?" good guy persona and never misses a note in portraying his tragic downfall. A truly amazing performance. For all this work, he got literally no attention for his performance outside of some good notices and was totally ignored at Oscar time. It's a shame since Kinnear probably will never have a role like this again, since most of Hollywood sees him as a second-rate comedian.
