this film should've been nominated or awarded
I'm suprised neither Greg Kinnear nor Willem Dafoe didn't get nominated in mainstream oscars.
it's also extremely dissapointing that Paul Schreader didn't get any of it. he's so superb.
Totally agree. One of Dafoe's best performances and definitely Kinnear's best performance to date as well as Schrader's best film in years after a series of lukewarm films. Everyone was in top-form here. The problem with the film is that it didn't get enough critical or commercial headway to get the Oscars' attention and the subject matter was just too sleazy. I still think in any case the guy who designed the title sequence should have gotten a special Oscar since he did an awesome job.

One could say that the academy has loosened up by nominating Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture but that movie was still beautiful to look out. Auto Focus made sleazy LOOK sleazy. Its leads weren't two perfectly clean shepherds yearning for each other in the great outdoors. Carpy and Bob were degraded and degrading sex addicts.
