John Carpenter?! Why name a character that?
If it's not supposed to be a reference, why would they name a character John Carpenter? I mean he's very famous, didn't the script writers know of him?

Based on a true story, actually. Not all of it was 100% true.

You have to be kidding me.
"The only person to celebrate Valentines Day the right way was Al Capone!". John Becker, M.D.
Actually, the makers of fictional films (other than bio pics) go to great lengths to avoid character names that might defame a real person. But, as other posters have pointed out, the John Carpenter who was Crane's buddy (and probable murderer) was a real-life guy.
"Martha Washington was a hip, hip, hip lady, man."
Are you serious?
shareWhy name a character John Carpenter? Because he was a real person and that is what his mother named him. Was the original poster joking? He is sometimes referred to as John Henry Carpenter. Bob Crane was murdered in 1978. Carpenter was a suspect but not indicted. The case was re-opened in 1994 and Carpenter was tried and acquitted. The prosecution may have presented a stronger case if the investigation had not been badly botched by Scottsdale Police. Carpenter passed away in 1998 at the age of 70. He may have been acquitted but was still a creepy character.
So I guess if they make a movie about one of the real Dave Stewarts, your head will explode.
