Any other movies like this?

I just watched Auto Focus tonight and loved it. Can you suggest any other movies like this that involve Hollywood as a background. Ive seen a few, I'm sure there's many I haven't yet check out though. Really enjoy them.

Thanks

'Mulholland Falls' is a really entertaining one, a lil different but catch that. Also watch 'Bully' which is in Florida but also tells a real life story about degenerate characters.
As an add-on to the OP's request, can anyone suggest other good movies satirizing sexual depravity? It's a theme especially needed now, what with all the teenage pregnancies and overpopulation, STDs etc. Thanks!

Bob Fosses' Star 80 with Eric Roberts, Mariel Hemingway and Cliff Robertson as Hefner.

I often watch that back to back with AutoFocus.

Wonderland (2003) reminds me a lot of this movie and I like both of them for the same reason--they examine the sordid underside of a lifestyle that's sen as glamorous on the surface. Wonderland is about John Holmes's purported involvement with the Wonderland murders in 1981, where 4 associates of JH's were bludgeoned to death in one apartment, and there was strong speculation that Holmes was involved somehow.

I love Wonderland. Great movie and definably in the same the same genre. That whole murder scene on Wonderland Ave was horrible. It was also the first time a videotape was used in a court case in the United States, making the crime scene even more painful. Kilmer's Holmes also had a little of that rough around the hedges that Defoe's Carpenter and Roberts' Snider both have.

It is a terrific movie--I have the DVD and have seen that crime scene video as well, UNBELIEVABLE. Literally sickening. It's really too bad the movie didn't get the critical acclaim it should've (IMO), I've often thought the movie was just too unwatchable. Like--critics acknowledged it was good but it would never really be *noticed* because it's so hard to watch. The movie Star 80 is also like that--terrific movie but I never want to see it again.

I've done some minor research on the film "Wonderland" and have come across the matter of the crime scene video. Despite its graphic nature. Am I right in saying it was the first 'hand-held' camera footage used in a criminal trial?

If impersonating a Police Officer is an offence, shouldn't actors be imprisoned?

reply

Yeap. You are correct.
<<The police were so overwhelmed by the amount of blood -- which literally trailed from room to room -- that they videotaped it. The grainy tape was used at the trial, marking the first time in American history that a video record of a murder scene was admitted as evidence in criminal trial.>>

Definitely not enough movies that are as judicious about promiscuous sex

Quasi-biographies like Hollywoodland, Frances, The Cat's Meow and The Wild Party come to mind. As for fiction, you might want to check out The Day of the Locust.

L.A. Confidential

Chinatown (one of Nicholson's best movies)

The Onion Field (this movie made James Wood a star)

Sunset Boulevard (the end-all classic of classics)

The Black Dahlia (several movies made of this classic Hollywood murder story)

I agree with the other posters and highly recommend Wonderland, Frances (a tough film to watch), and esp. Star 80 -- Eric Roberts is WONDERFUL in this film, amazing, really.

Now there was a case of bad casting as Dorothy Stratten was a knock out MH didn't even come close in that area, plus that nonsense as she was flat and had to have a boob job. You know there was also a TV movie about DS where Jamie Lee Curtis played the lead

A little history:
Back in 1965 there were two (Jean) HARLOW bios, one with Carol Lynley was filmed by Warner Bros. in a process that was suppose to look like live or taped black & White TV it didn't work, now trust me back then one of the reasons one went to the movies was to see color, not something like this. This process was also used for the HAMLET film with Richard Burton, the other film was a an R&B show.
The other had Carrol Baker from Paramount in wide screen and color.
Another case of mis-casting as both ladies had small breasts, the real Jean was very well gifted.
Funny how both had the same first name.

I also second other's suggestions of Wonderland and The Cat's Meow.

Happy viewing!

Yeah Hollywoodland is pretty good.

Bob Fosse was an expert on dark, showbiz-downward-spiral biopics. In addition to Star 80, I suggest Lenny.

Yeah, they're dead; they're--all messed up!
