sharePretty much what was portrayed in the movie; Scottsdale AZ, in a hotel room, skull bashed in pretty badly, electrical cord tied around his neck, found lying in bed, etc. As for who did it and why they did, that's unsolved (at least officially).
shareObviously, John Carpenter did it. Those stupid keystone cops in Scottsdale botched the case.

He did it because Crane was ending their friendship, finally realzing how creepy he was. Carpenter realized that meant an end to his meal ticket, as far as getting women. He certainly wasn't going to be able to pick up chicks on his own. He snapped and killed Crane.
shareWhy the cord though?? Im sure the bashing of the skull killed him - so why wrap the cord around his neck?
I hate how IMDb signatures look like part of the post.
I suppose if someone was mentally unstable enough to kill someone by bashing their head in, they may not have a logical reason for anything else they do.
shareProbably symbolic -- the cord around his neck was some kind of an electrical cord or video cable from one of his VCRs, and the bludgeoning of his skull was done with a camera tripod. I don't think the killer used those items just because they happened to be nearby.

I agree with Harold. I think it was symbolic. Crane used Carpenter for all the video equipment till he didn't need him anymore. Carpenter used Crane for the women and probably was jealous of Crane. Carpenter realized he was being used, argument ensued and murder happened. jmo
shareEither that or he tried to strangle him with the cord and wasn't strong enough to finish the job so then bashed his head in.
Is the nightmare black or are the windows painted?
"A day without sex..Is a day wasted!" Oh right. I totally got a quagmire vibe out of these guys, sex addicts.
shareI grew up watching Bob Crane on TV, and he was always one of my favorite actors. I was in high school when he was murdered, and I was devastated. Throughout the years, I have read and seen everything I could about his murder. I am convinced John Carpenter was the murderer. For reasons stated by other posters, Crane was Carpy's meal ticket to all the women he wanted. He wasn't going to score without Crane around and when Crane pulled the plug on their friendship, that was Motive for murder.
Carpenter had called Crane's apartment several times the day he was killed. The police impounded Carpenter's car (he was the chief suspect). Blood smears were found in the car that matched Crane's blood type. When the case was reopened in 1990, John Carpenter was charged with the murder. The car was reinspected and a piece of Crane's brain was found (I believe on the car door). Unbelievably, this piece of evidence was misplaced by the Scottsdale PD and therefore inadmissible at the trial of John Carpenter. He was found innocent at trial and died 4 years later in 1998.
The Video Cord was applied postmortem. This was simply an act of rage after the killing was done with the tripod. I'm not convinced Carpenter was using the video equipment as murder weapons in an act of symbolism, after all, he wouldn't want to point the finger at himself if he could help it. I think it was more the fact that the equipment was there and provided a means for the murder.
There was also ejaculate found on Crane's body (not his). Another act of rage and humiliation committed by Carpenter.
There's simply no other plausible suspect. It's possible a jealous husband or boyfriend could have carried out the murder, but Carpenter had strong motives, and the physical evidence points to him.
One thing does seem odd to me, though. Even though Crane told Carpenter "he wanted out," Carpy held out hope that Crane would come back around. So it doesn't make perfect sense for Carpy to kill Crane, because obviously with Crane dead, there's absolutely no hope of Carpenter ever using him to score chicks.
It remains a Hollywood mystery!
Bob Crane was bludgeoned to death with a weapon that was never found, though investigators believed it to be a camera tripod. An electrical cord had been tied around his neck.
