Aren't all Hollywood Actors like Bob Crane?

I mean, come on- we hear about it all the time with any famous actors- they ALL sleep around with hundreds and sometimes thousands of women (charlie sheen, jack nicholson, etc) - i'm not sure why crane's behavior was seen as being so out of the ordinary or disgusting- this stuff is standard fare for hollywood

I think the compulsive and kniving nature of his womanising is different from most Hollywood actors. He was almost like a hunter seeking prey. With most Hollywood womanisers they just seen like smooth likeable guys who happen to take advantage of there fame, its more casual and playful, and less deliberate in the nature of there seeking women. With Jack Nicholson and Charlie Sheen everybody knows what there getting, there upfront about it in there image and hence it doesn't come as a shock when they do these sort of things. Crane presented himself as a family man and had a really wholesome image on Tv and film, this made it more shocking. It would be like finding out that Tom Hanks was a huge womaniser, who was having orgies, plus was filming and photographing these sexual escapades, except even more extreme because of the time period that this took place in.

People said that Bob Crane would walk up to a woman in front of her boyfriend or husband and proposition her with them standing right there, he would do the same when asking them out on dates or giving them his number, thats how compulsive he was. Also the fact that according to the police reports he filmed a lot of the women without there consent adds to the extreme nature of it.

I disagree - there is a level of perversion here that goes beyond simply excessive womanizing. There is Bob Crane, and there is Charlie Sheen; and that's about it. Most of the other guys are just sluts!

I don't think Schrader is a big fan of promiscuous sex in the first place. The Crane story is a good parable for how wrong it is.
Schrader's audio commentary is great. He mentions one celebrity, supposedly faithful to his wife, who told him how difficult it is to resist the temptations.

Crane filmed a lot of his exploits. Not everyone else did that.

I don't think celebrities sleep around any more than people all across the US (or anywhere else). You just hear about it more because their lives are not as private as most people.

At my job, I see people who are cheating on their spouses on an almost daily basis.

You have a drug/sex addiction in Hollywood, kiss your career goodbye. Only ignorant consumers would think differently.

It's my guess that most Hollywood actors just screw a lot of women.

Big difference between screwing around a lot and secretly videotaping it nearly all the time.

Lots of actors don't cheat and act like teenaged boys on Viagra, just as often too, I daresay. I'm a huge Jimmy Stewart fan, and he's quite well-known for being faithful to his wife for decades. Same for Robert Redford, Paul Newman, and many others. We hear about the famous affairs and cheating and scandals because these people are famous and because, let's face it, we love to wallow in other peoples' misdeeds.

In my opinion, I think Society allows itself to take a moral high ground and people feel all better about themselves when they see scandal elsewhere with the Privileged and Famous.

Part 2 of that is money. Virtue and Faithfulness never sold a bunch of newspapers, magazines or air time. Who will pay to watch an old marry couple at home watching Little House on the Prairie? Bah, but they will pay big bucks to see Mob Wives be unfaithful with tuna fish who are undergoing gender reassignment and live on sheep farms in Alaska!
