Willem Dafoe as Carpenter

What a superb performance, it rates alongside his best work.

I am a big Dafoe fan since watching The Boondock Saints a few years ago, so i may be biased

Though not his best work, it shows how far Dafoe is able to push the envelope and how comfortable he is in his characters and his own performance.

Let me see...
He's played:
A gay FBI Agent,
2 priests, one that lived in China and fell in love with some guy's wife and one that helps Jewish kids in WW2,
A freaky looking vampire,
A cool Sgt. in the Vietnam war,
A robber badly in need for a dentist,
A fish with scars from trying to escape a tank,
2 gang leaders, one that steals some other guy's ex-girlfriend and one that (I think) almost destroys a town,
A wheelchaired Vietnam war veteren,
A Super Villian,
A mexican druglord,
A psyco computer geinus that wants to crash a ship,
A millitary commander of a SF unit trying to get rid of mexican druglords,
Another FBI agent trying to solve a murder by the book,
A counterfit,
A Guard,
An electrition or something like that,
A lawyer that gets laid by Madonna,
A boxer in a WW2 consintration camp,
Another kiddnapper,
Jesus (literaly),
A poet...
Are you getting my drift? He has played so many parts that the list will go on and on. He is very comfortable playing any role really. That's what makes him so cool.

Yeah, Dafoe is definitely a master at his profession. He can definitely convince you he's psycho, when he's probably the sanest one on the set.

Willem Dafoe, is a very versatile actor, he's one of those very few actors THAT is really an actor WHO can act, and is not just a "Star" which in my opinion "STARS" are boring. Willem is one of those actors that holds your attention, and I like the fact that he's willing to take chances and not try to play it safe. He's definitely not typecasted, to me he's an artist, and an actor with real skill. He'll never be washed up.

Dafoe is good at playing oddball or quirky characters, he has sort of an odd face, but really in some ways he is quite beautiful. His character Carpy was really memorable. An actor who isnt afraid to play goofy or strange parts is really what an artist is.

Kineer also did a good job as Crane, even though he doesnt look like him, he did a good job in trying to get his mannerism and pleasant personality down.

Willem Dafoe is an excellent actor. "Auto Focus" was one of his many strong performances.

Willem Dafoe is superb here in one of his many nuanced roles. I've never seen him give a performance that wasn't spot-on excellent.
