Am I the only one who sees a direct connection with Saturday Night Fever story-wise ? Guy from a poor neighborhood with a dead-end job finds solace in a club and enters some kind of contest to prove he's someone ? Besides, SNF was quite bleak too when you think of it.
shareGreat comparison, I'm a big fan of both movies and for whatever reason never made the connection. Another similarity was that both Jimmy and Tony Manero had three male friends, and two girls that vied for their attention. The difference perhaps being that the friends that Jimmy had were more supportive and wanted the same dream that Jimmy did, whereas the friends that Tony had were deadbeat losers that dragged him down.
