My DVD has no subtitles!!!

the same thing happened to me :(

We watched this film in my Film Studies class and my teacher suggested something along the lines that technically this film was made for a Spanish speaking audience so therefore there are no English subtitles. Even though the film is both in English and Spanish, even when they do speak Spanish, although you cannot really understand it word by word, the narrative is set out so that you know generally what they are speaking about . For example, "oh I'm going to have to talk to you mother about *insert topic here" and then you'll see the scene of the father talking to the mother so we can assume that's what they're talking about (you can be a bit cynical and say that this is done on purpose because the film may be actually aimed at a world audience for people so at least this way they would understand the basic concept of the film). So even though subtitles would be nice, I think this is the reason why there aren't any English subs for the Spanish bits... erm if this makes any sense.

I experienced this with "The Devil's Backbone". It is infuriating to watch. There are long minutes of Spanish dialog then you get like two words in English subtitles! I absolutely despised it,and thought it was fraudulent to advertise it as having subtitles! They might as well have left them out,because there is no way,that film could even hold my interest,with no clue about the story.

My dvd has subtitles while they are speaking Spanish - without even choosing them at the main menu.
