Why Was Ana's Mom So Mean To Her?
Is there a specific reason or was her mom just a bitch?
shareA lot of Hispanic moms are like that. I know my mom is like that sometimes. They all mean well like most mothers. It is a guilt trip because she wants her daughter there. She doesn't want to lose her.
shareAs strange as it ay sound, I think Ana's mother saw a lot of herself in her daughter and she may have been jealous. I do think that she didn't want her daughter to leave, that's only natural. I'm sure Ana's mother had dreams and desires when she was young. Then she realized her reality and accepted her life. Sometimes a part of you has to die just to function. She just wanted her daughter to not think of her as a cautionary tale, but to be proud of her mother.
shareI think it's partly because she was a bitch and also, as the above user said, a bit jealous. In the bedroom scene with her husband she more or less admits so. TO the best of my knowledge, She says in the bedroom "It's not fair. I've been working since I was 13. Ana is 18. It's her turn. She must work."
Add in the fact that in the hispanic/latino community it's still expected for women to be housewives. Ana's mom shows obsession with Ana finding a man and sadly even writes off Estella once she gets too old, saying it's too late for her to find a husband. (I think Estella is suppose to be only 28 in the movie!) And it's also expected that both young men and women to not go to college and help out the family by working.
Of course I am not trying to generalize on hispanic/latino families. Not all are the same. I've seen this in many of my hispanic/latino friends. My best friend use to tell me that her mother would even tell her that if she didn't want to finish high school, it was okay. She could just work.
her mom was mean to her, she told her she was fat and unattractive. plus, she didn't even care to see her off to college and that was sad!
shareHer mom was a classic abuser. I think she tried to keep Ana's self esteem low so she could control her. In the end she realized that she broke free from her and Carmen (The mom) knew that she had no power over her anymore and she didn't want to see her off because she felt defeated.
