Why kill off Xander Cage?

I don't know about anyone else, but this idea seems way too anti-climactic and dark for such a fun film. Especially given the quality of the "sequel" (I prefer to act as if it doesn't exist). Anyway, my question is why kill off Xander Cage in the first place? He's an excellent character and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him kick ass in the film, and because the character's death directly affected the outcome of not only the sequel we got, but what would've been xXx part 3. Which is what State of the Union should have been. Thought? Opinions? Hopes? Dreams?

Likely because Diesel and Cohen didn't want to return to the series because Sony had different intentions for xXx 2 and thought Ice Cube would've made a good lead to carry the franchise...A lot of good that did. A proper sequel has been talked about for a while with Diesel returning as Cage.

Did we watch the same film?

I just saw this the other day and Vin Diesel sat washed up on some kind of wooden structure at the end after defusing the boat-bomb.

If he dies in xXx 2, I can't say, as too many people warned me not to bother with it (though, some negative reviews kept this big Vin Diesel fan away from this for so long (and with the god-awful music, I can understand a lot of the hate).

I hated xXx2, but I thought they said that Cage was on another assignment- not killed.

They said Xander was killed in Bora Bora. Since Vin Diesel will make another XXX movie, maybe Xander will say he faked his death.

Haven't see either sequel. I wonder how they handled it.
