Eastern Europe

It's supposed to be happening in Prague, right? And the mob was Russian, right?

So:
Why did they keep on talking Russian (well, their version of Russian, at least) if they wanted to remain hidden and control their terrorist operations from a safe place? And didn't bother to learn Czech? Not everybody in Czech Republic speaks or even knows Russian. Wouldn't that be a give-away, then?

It seems to me that this is another of those flicks that support the wrong view about Eastern Europe (it is not one country-one language place) and then gives people bad ideas and stereotypes about that part of the world.

Come on, it's an American action movie, do you honestly think the majority of the Yank public care about things like that? Unfortunately, as everyone knows, they don't. Not a surprise, and it won't change soon.

But hey, we can always laugh at the fact they accept their own ignorance.

reply

are either of you honestly going to pretend that this film was trying to be realistic?! Really? Common, the plot is an extreme sports figure becomes a secret spy and uses his bad ass grinding abilities to outrun terrorists. Common people, get over it. Besides, pretty sure this movie is targeted at teenage "bros."

reply

Policewoman in Prague also speaks Russian ;)

reply

They couldn't find any actors who spoke Czech? Ridiculous.

reply

Most of the non-American cast were Czech actors... Jákl, Marek Vašut, Filipensky, Luboš Pospíšil ...

reply

The one who translated Diesel's speech to an audience before snowboarding scene? Nope, she didn't. Whatever it was, it wasn't Rus for sure.

haha arent you stereotyping about America? ahh gotta love the hypocrites
believe it or not but not everyone in america has the IQ of a 3rd grader

anyways my point is who is going to just automatically assume that someone is a terrorist because they are speaking in a different language? =\ come on get real

reply

Sometimes its hard to believe (the IQ thing).

reply

you impress yourself with your ignorance.

well done.

I'm from Prague, so maybe I can explain this a little better.

The Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia) was occupied by Russia up until 1990. After the "iron curtain" fell, many Russians remained in the Czech Republic. In fact, one very popular city near Prague (Karlovy Vary) is mainly inhabited by Russians.

So if someone was overheard speaking Russian in Prague, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. Therefore Anarchy 99 wouldn't seem overly suspicious. They were "rich Russians" in the CZ and that is quite normal here.

Plus almost everyone in Prague is bi-lingual or even tri-lingual - and a foreigner could totally survive there without knowledge of the CZ language.

they prolly sound the same to most people. some people can tell french from french Canadian or Mexican Spanish from Spanish but most connot.

reply

Even though Russian and Czech have the same Slavic root, they are much more different than Castillian vs. Mexican Spanish. Even if you don't speak either one, Czech and Russian sound completely different.

reply

How does someone, who has never been to the region, not recognizing the difference between Czech and Russian make them stupid? Do you recognize every language when you hear it? If you were watching a movie that was taking place in Hong Kong and the characters where speaking Korean instead of Cantonese you would be able to distinguish?

reply

I am sure that at least 99% of people who have watched this movie can't tell the difference between czech and russian language (bar eastern europeans and world travelers).

reply

lol americans are too stupid to know the diference anyway no harm done

reply

[deleted]

even more lol... everyone in this thread are trying so hard to be smarter then average americans (which is not so hard), that they overlooked major gaf - czechoslovakia is not in eastern europe lolz. its in central europe... so, get some education, or better, consult wiki before posting things like that ;)

reply

in geostrategic terms of cold war times everything east of the iron courtain is eastern europe. That´s why a part of germany is eastern europe, while greece isn´t. ;-)

reply

Czechoslovakia isn't a country.

Talks *beep* about Americans, doesn't realize that American didn't become a superpower for no reason. If you really are dumb enough to think Americans are as a whole unintelligent then you're a fool. Underestimation of America has been a major mistake of many countries over the years. We are wolves. You're false sense of superiority exposes you as weak and ignorant. Wouldn't make it in say New York City for a week,
