We seem to be the only country that makes movies like this. This is a real reflection of how far we have come as a society. All walks of life flock to these types of flicks. As a society, we have more mass murderers and more crazies than any other country. I wonder if Hollywood should be accountable for every copy-cat murderer that they desensitize with this genre. Or, maybe good old Hollywood knows.... Maybe this is who we really are.
shareFirst, judging by the amount of money this movie grossed, I wouldn't say that people exactly flocked to it. These movies are made for several reasons: they're relatively cheap to make; they're entertaining; there's a small but viable market for them, especially among younger viewers. Your comments on mass murderers and "crazies" are understandable but misguided. There is no scientific evidence that causally links film violence to actual violence. I agree that gratuitous gore can desensitize us, but I would not agree that that is what compels some people to murder, torture, or maim.
shareHave you seen Switchblade Romance? Martyrs? Inside? Eden Lake? Frontiers? Not to mention Asian horror films. We are FAR from the only country who makes films like this. The french are making a lot of very graphic and very good horror films. This is not an American phenomena. Also, movies, music, video games and literature do not create psychos. That is a scapegoat. To hold Hollywood accountable for copy-cat murderers would be incredibly silly. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

As well as Azurejewel30's examples we also have films like Wolf Creek (Australia) and Creep, Hush and The Descent (UK) so it isn't just an American thing, everyone likes a bit of violence.

Before that the elite thing to do was watch prisoners get torn apart by lions...
We've just intellectualised it to some degree, stamped the term 'entertainment' on it and, for most of us, we don't need to experience anything more 'real' than a bunch of teenagers transgressing codes of moral conduct and sensibility.
Thing is, American violence is in movies is usually gratuitous. I'm not saying all of it is, and there's plenty of violence like that in foreign horror films too, but America likes to go over the top with it more often.
I think the OP's question is fascinating. It's completely F*UCKED how much people love seeing victims tortured and torn to pieces whilst screaming for their lives. If you REALLY think about it, it's very disturbing.

Don't forget the English have been making real strides in film lately too with Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Shuan of the Dead and such.

All films 'American' companies will NEVER remake (and if you looked you'd be surprised how many Hollywood films ARE foreign remakes, and not just 'horror', either).

Most people don't even like horror movies. Look at the box office and listen to the movies people are talking about. No 'Wrong Turn' movie usually comes up. Of the people that like horror movies, the ones that have fun with these, know that it's fake and everyone's acting. But horror fans like other types of movies, too.
If anyone trips and falls into watching a movie that they think is robbing their soul of all their sugary goodness, they are free to either get up and walk out of the theatre or turn the TV or computer off.
There's no need to look down on the people that are entertained by getting scared or grossed out. There's nothing wrong with them. Charles Manson and his creepy buddies have never seen a "Wrong Turn" let alone the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" which actually wasn't very gory at all. They did what they did anyway. So did Ed Gein. People don't watch this movie to learn how to be, they watch imagining what they'd do if they were in that mess and to see if the victims make it out. They also have a sense of humor about these things.
This movie isn't for everybody. No movie is for everybody. You have to be smart enough to choose the right ones for yourself. There are trailers, websites, articles, and TV spots to let people know what a movie is about. Watch them and pay attention. Then you can avoid making a "Wrong Turn".
Movies are hard for some people.
People like to be scared. People like to go to the movies, and be terrified by what they see.
And, I think to some extent, Horror seems to be an easy genre to break into... Here in Australia, there's a lot of horror flicks that are made... not all seeing the light of day however, like one I worked on called Sleeper...
But a typical slasher/horror flick is set in isolation... with a group of people cut off from the world... great budget controllers for a feature film... and the audience is often more forgiving of the scripts for these features... and the cast are often best played by unknowns... (or perhaps more serious actors simply wont appear in them!)

You must have never heard of movies like a Serbian Film. America isn't the only country that makes violent and disturbing movies. To suggest otherwise is just foolish.
If Americans made some of the foreign movies that get produced there would be boycotts and protests. Thankfully the rash of torture porn movies that were made in America fizzled out in recent years, but the majority of them were not very successful.
