I never thought I would say this, but... This one HAS to be re-made.

I'm dead *beep* serious. The idea of a killer website had so much potential to be good, but they ruined with what was a idiotic story, bad progression, laughable scare-effects, UNBEARABLY bad acting from Stephen Rea (who was MUCH better in "V For Vendetta"), horrendous dialogue and... uuum... Let's not talk about the ending, it's so stupid I can't even describe it.
So if this one was remade with a BETTER director and a BETTER script, what would it require?

I think a lot of horror movies had interesting concepts, but what held them back was the fact they were made in the 00s as "mainstream" horror. Because of that, you get horrible writing and horrible characters where a decent writer and director could've crafted something memorable out of the base concept. Another example would be The Ruins. Interesting concept, but the characters were all unlikable "typical entitled American twenty-somethings" that made bad move after bad move and threw temper tantrums constantly. Just because these are horror movies doesn't mean it's an excuse for bad writing. Well developed and likable characters goes a long way.

The problem comes from the mentality regarding horror in the late 90s throughout the majority of the 00s, where since Scream, horror is considered a joke of itself and characters are written ultra stupid because, "Derp, that's how horror IS!!". You also got an ungodly amount of stereotyped characters, to the max. Where as any teenager prior to this would've been just a typical teen, now all their worst attributes would be amplified tenfold. They'd be even more entitled, even more angsty and even more stupid.

The majority of horror coming out during this time(American horror, as Japanese and European horror was really taking the mantle and delivering that what Hollywood could not) were made as flash, no bang. The equivalent of jingling a set of keys in front of idiots. Producers made movies like this because it was considered an easy thing. You don't need a brain to write a horror movie, you just give them some stupid "disturbing" imagery and there you go! Of course, it's not that easy, but back then, that's what they were thinking.

Personally, with this movie, the concept of a website killing you is great. It can be done with a modern sense of horror. I would think, if it should be remade, it should be more "creepypasta"-esque, and given that we are more knowledgeable about the internet NOW than back in 2002, not fail in some of the ideas presented in this movie. The story should be, like in creepypastas, about a small group of people, mainly teens(who are likable, as in creepypastas, the fact you can relate and care for them adds to the horrific situation). There should be no real explanation behind the horror, either. Keep it mysterious and supernatural. You don't need a Samara-esque explanation to why everything's happening or how you can save yourself by uncovering a great mystery. It's scarier when you don't know what to do.
