E Grades
It appears to me that Kelly is an E-2 or above. She would start as an E-1, which there are no bars for, or even those black things (I forget what they're called at the moment)

True, she should start as E-1, but since her stepdad is commander and grades E-1 E-1 are usually automatic with time in the cadet corps so being an E-1 probably shouln't be a surprise.
shareit's not boot camp, rotc and jrotc use slightly different rank so they would be unreallated to actual E ranks
I actually do go to a real military school and you are right that you do have to go through some kind of training before you actually gain rank, but if she was just a recruit than the movie would have to be filmed very differently.
sharei'm jrotc and we all start as an E-1 and our enlisted ranks look EXACTLY like real ranks it's the officer ranks that get a little wierd
