Why does su yong have an accent?

She doesnt as a girl in the first movie, and apparently continued to live in LA. couldn't they have found an actress without an accent

reply

hmm .. i have some asian friends (chinese n korean) and they've been in US all their lives, but still have a hint of chinese/korean accent in their english. My guess is this is probably cuz of the extensive use of their language at home and other places like church etc.

the point is.. if you have no accent as a child.. why would you suddenly develop an accent as an adult?

"Don't milk the cat!"

reply

Oh, and the actress was really bad as well. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.

reply

Because she is Asian

reply

There are a lot of Asians who have no accents. I am Chinese myself but I've had people talk to me on the phone and thought I was white. And everyone's always like.. wow how come you have no accent? *rolls eyes*

"Don't milk the cat!"

i wonder why the heck they just didn't use the actress from the first film?

"I'm your huckleberry."-Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone

reply

I guess she's like 18 or so now, so she could have played a teenager no problem. Maybe she just got out of acting like so many child actors do.

Soo Yung DID have a slight accent in the first movie...

In the first movie the ambassador was consul Han and that time he lived in Los Angeles. The consul is the head of the consulate which comes under embassy and therefore ambassador is a position above consul. In this movie, since he was ambassador, he must be living in Washington D.C(this is where all embassies are located). The diplomats usually have the term of 2-3 years especially the ones like ambassadors or consul. It is probable that ambassador lived in other countries as well before getting the position of ambassador to US. So apparently the girl didn't live in LA all these years and therefore the accent is possible as she lived in several countries and she spoke mandarin at home.

Uhm...watch the first movie again. She CLEARLY has a slight accent. And guess what? 10 years later...the character STILL has a slight accent.

In Rush Hour 1, the girl maybe had a VERY slight accent (if at all), which I thought was strange, cause she just go to America. The girl in RH3 had a very NOTICEABLE accent, and it was definitely a glaring error.

I thought that was really weird too. She grew up in America so she should have an American accent. I think Jackie Chan picked that actress, she's probably known in Asia but maybe they wanted to give her some U.S. exposure. I thought she sucked, not just because it was obvious that English was not her first language but because her acting was bad. She did her speaking parts with the kind of intensity that belongs in a Chinese epic period film. This had to be her first American film. There are plenty of Chinese-American actresses, much prettier ones might I add, that could have pull that off better.
