Why does the older Soo Yung have an accent?

This is something I just notice the other day when Rush Hour 3 was on TV but how did the older Soo Yung in part 3 have an accent when the younger version of her from part 1 spoke perfect English? Even if you spend most of your adult life in China you would never loose so much of your English where it would be to the point that you would acquire a Chinese accent. Especially since you spoke it perfectly as a child.

My personal theory is that as Soo Yung is now of legal tender boning age in Rush Hour 3, the typical male caucasian viewer of this movie would prefer a fantasy of a demure, sweet, fobby asian girl rather than the typical American educated and modern woman. As the Rush Hour series itself just feeds off of idiotic racial stereotypes, I don't think this would be a stretch.

Er................yes, what that person said! ^^

Nobody wants to bone a girl with opinions? Your post is way beyond sexist, I don't know who it degrades more men or women.
Even though I am no worse than a beast, don't I deserve to live?

in the beginning when consul han is leaving for LA, lee runs into soo yung and says something to the effect of "you're the best student i ever had" and "will you practice your kicks and eye gouges?" or something...he obviously knew her since she was a baby...she just continued on with martial arts...simple...watch the movie...
in the 3rd movie carter admits he's been taking lessons...

The reason is simple, the little girl actress in RUSH HOUR is asian american, with asian blood, but grown in US. But the actress playing the older Soo in RUSH HOUR 3 is actually a chinese actress. I don't think the director purposely planned this to show something, it's simply because this time a chinese actress was casted instead of a chinese american girl.

Also remember in Rush Hour 1, when Soo Young was being kidnapped, she defends herself quite well for a little girl. and yes she was training with Lee for who knows how long. Lee did say, she was his best student. Lee also did teach Carter some moves in the first Rush Hour. Lee taught Carter how to quickly take an opponents weapon out of their hand, like he did to Carter (in Rush Hour 1).

I know this doesn't address the accent (I agree with the person who simply stated that this was not an american raised actress) but early in Rush Hour 3 they go to Soo Yung's locker at the Kung Fu (?) studio with the fighting kids and the giant protector. So Soo Young obviously had training.

I was actually disappointed in her lack of fighting ability in the hospital scene. I expected her to be at least as effective as Carter!

reply

To be fair she said that her locker was at the kung fu school where she taught, so obviously must have had trarining in the ten intervening years. But the accent did anoy me, i noticed just before while watching the first one that the little girl had an american accent, so hmmm....i suppose they just don't care if people nitpick :)

No, my question, I get to go first....

the actress sucked and i expected her to fight a little better like that one bitch from number two. and her accent got on my nerves.they should of left her out.

We may not have a woodshed on board, but that boy is gonna get a whuppin' anyway!

Uh, it could have something to do with the fact that the girls in #1 and #3 are not the same actresses but are playing the same character. Continuity's a bitch aint it?

Why isn't it possible that Soo Yung moved to China sometime after the events of Rush Hour 1 and then picked up the accent in the nine years between 1 and 3? I mean she was still really young, it's not that unbelievable that she could change accents after growing up in China for 9 years.

I knew this girl from Hong Kong a few years ago. Her English was natural, but it was accented. I saw her again recently and her accent disappeared. I dunno where it went. It's true that you can lose your accent if you use the language a lot. Lots of cases of people losing a British accent in the States. Maybe it has to do with how familiar you are with it?

Christian Bale has lived in the US since he was 13 (or something) and he's still somehow managed to keep his accent, though I do admit it does seem to have a bit of an American twang at times. Hence he's so good at it...

Oh gosshhh...

Ok as for accent...my uncle lived in france for 5 years.. and even if he was BORN and RAISE in quebec, he still pick up the accent to a point he was annoying to us during the hollidays... Yes quebec and france share french... but its as different as british and americans... And dunno about you, but british accent annoys me personally, its like they over pronounce every word... because im use to the american accent and im north american myself. So french/british, same type of prick accent to me... Don't want to trash talk, its just how i see it. We got sometimes people in quebec who try to "outspeak" themselves with complicated word and they sometimes sounds like the french... so we kinda always make fun of it. Where was i again? Oh yeah, my uncle got back in quebec like almost 20 years ago... yet he still kept a part of his french accent.... how crazy it is... i dunno.. when he is REALLY pissed off, he will pull out a bunch of our slang like Criss, Colisse, Tabarnak, but usually he will keep a very straight forward language and don't use out usual habbits of saying english words mixed with french ones or the typical quebec slang that i have no idea where it come from.

So this being said... in term of this movie... ITS JUST A MOVIE PLEEEEEAAAASE. Like anybody remembered that much about how little Soo Yung talked? I mean of course they will always switch actor and actress for different parts... part of the movie undustry, and sometimes voice will be different... hell in supernatural Ruby 1 and Ruby 2 where 2 totally different looking gals and they spoke very differently yet they played the same character in a different host... and it was during the course of 2 years only.

I don't even understand why somebody would make such a drama about it, especially for such a small character...

Alice is the worst character of all time, she need to die in the last movie. Chris/Jill are RE !!!
