A few things one can learn from this movie (spoilers):

1) When the famous actor of an old generation makes terrible grimaces popping his eyes out and making his mouth looking as a huge slot – it means that his character is in a fit of anger!

2) After the father murders his own injured son in hospital and goes away, his silhouette may slowly disappear into heavenly radiance…

3) It’s rather natural for a devastated widower to lynch his own injured son for the sake of his beloved late wife.

4) When you’re going to the lowlife blackmailer's house with the intent of killing him – take the money with you, for you should pay the ransom so & so.

5) It’s rather natural for the people who are broke to live a posh life.

6) Author's moral defects usually declare itself as an artistic failure.

If you are going to carry out an armed robbery then you should go and rent a car using your real name and credit card. There is no way that the car could then be traced back to you.

Unless you happen to leave a CD in the car. If you leave a CD in the card then you should really panic because it could be used to trace you for using that car that was rented using your real name, address, credit card and drivers licence.

8. the agony and struggle caused by suffocating beneath the pillow would have shown up on the ECG as wild erratic lines and be a evidence for murder. But flatlining 2 or 3 times followed by perfectly normal heartbeat seconds before his death won't be something an autopsy would reveal as strange. Especially if a visitor just arrived at the very same moment and didn't even care to stay to know about the outcome, no matter that it's his own son. Completely unbelievable.

"Author´s moral defects usually declare itself as an artistic failure".

Any clues as to how this particular statement is to be understood in the context of this particular film?

Dubious Author's position concerning the image of Daddy murdering his son, whatever the reason is. I didn't feel the Author shared my disgust.

Anyway, it's not more than my personal notion.

How can anyone seriously think Lumet considered the climactic murder some kind of happy ending. Not sure if "disgust" is the most accurate word to describe what I felt, or was intended to feel, but that turn of events was quite undoubtedly highly perverse.

What the "happy ending" ending idea has to do with all that? I do no tell that I can't take scene of filicide as "climatic", but the tendency to give it the mood of Greek Tragedy is disturbing, I would even say inappropriate.

Well it IS a tragedy, even though the mood is hardly grandiose or elevated. And, come to think of it, there´s indeed an element of perverse glee in just how totally screwed the entire family ended up as a result of this supposed "perfect crime" the two jackasses masterminded. Who´s to say though what´s "appropriate" and what isn´t; at any rate, it´s a far cry from the nihilistic, casually sadistic spectacles someone like Tarantino cooks up every few years.

9) At the hospital there are often malfunctions with the machines. But don't worry, it's so easy to fix that even ordinary people can do it without a supervision from the medical staff.
