Life Imitating Art?

This movie was the first thing I thought of when I heard Hoffman died from a heroin overdose. I now wonder if Hoffman was attracted to this role because he was a heroin addict and could easily relate to the character.

Glad to see I'm not the only one to think of this film. Perhaps getting so close to the flame that once burnt you may not have been the best choice, but he could also have been trying to challenge himself.

Addiction is a horrible condition that unless you have experience of, is utterly alien to a lot of people. We will never know for sure if his involvement in this film was part of the trigger that led to life imitating art, and besides his character in the film does not die of an overdose....

Also the first thing i thought of, He was a wealthy guy in the movie that kept it as a secret, it was heroin, who knows when he started tho

He'd been a user since his twenties. But I thought he was using cocaine in the movie..

reply

He was using both drugs in the movie.

Very true, first thing I thought as well. Also, watching the film soon after it came out I had this feeling that Hoffman was playing a role very close to his heart, not knowing about his past troubles. I believe he had been using for a while again before his death, I know his girlfriend left him because he had been drinking like a madman for a few years again.

RIP beautiful man. What a talent, you're already missed.

Maybe more accurate to say art was imitating life.

Yeah, after he died, this was the first thing I thought of. Really messed up how he died in real life. Damn shame, he was a great talent.

Wait a minute- so Hoffman DID die of an overdose? He wasn't murdered by Albert Finney?

reply

It probably helped him relate to the character/get into the mindset of Andy, but I doubt he took the role solely because of the heroin aspect.

When I watched this movie, I kept this thinking that this was probably how Hoffman was in real life and not just the drugs part. I dunno, that's just the feeling I got 

Very good. But brick not hit back!

reply

I'm pretty sure he took the role to work with legendary director Sidney Lumet.
