A new game to play while watching this

We get a group together on Monday nights and draw 5 minute slots out of a hat. We all throw 5 bucks into a pot, and the first time Favreau brings up "Swingers" the person with that time period wins the pot. Inevitably, if you have the first 5 minute time slot, you win (Especially if Vaughn is a guest, which is half the episodes). Yeah, sure you made swingers Favreau, but it really wasn't that great a movie, and you should really get over it.

Should have a side-bet for RUDY.

He mentions it, in the shows he doesn't mention SWINGERS.

reply

For the past year-plus, should have a side-bet for 'Elf.' I know that this was Fav's biggest project since 'Swingers' - write/direct etc. but he does seem to use it as a frame-of-reference quite a bit. OK, you made a movie where Wil Farrell screams a lot .... Who hasn't?

God, people really hate Favreau. It's no masterpiece, but I kind of liked Swingers. Made shouldn't have been. And Elf-well, I didn't see it. But I kind of think Favreau comes across as less than your typical Hollywood ashhole even if he does reference Swingers every show. I like Dinner For Five, even if I have to sit through it watching them smoking stogies like some elitist frat reunion.

he has another really good movie , forget the name but it a ufo twist at the end,

I think a lot of people who tune in to this show do it because they like Jon Favreau from Swingers. Like many people have said, he tends to dominate the conversation. So, you better like him, or this show is not for you. Therefore, the people that still watch the show like Jon Favreau, and don't mind hearing him talk about Swingers and Made. Also, Vince Vaughn has been on exactly 2 of about 30 episodes. So have Kevin Smith, Kevin James, Peter Berg, Famke Janssen, Ron Livingston, and a few others.

Swingers was the best illustration of subtle humor ive ever seen. This is one of my all time favorite movies. Maybe you have to live in so cal to appreciate it, but i dont think so. Its a very real-life comedy. In fact, much of this movie is autobiographical for not only Favreau, but Vaughn as well. Some people aren't into the subtle humor, but if you are, you recognize this movies brilliance.

reply

I disagree with you that "Swingers" wasn't that great - - I think it's unbelievable, and my friends and I quote every line.

BUT, you sure are right about how Favreau manages to work it into every damn episode! Get over it already, Jon!

reply

WELL, I love "Dinner for Five." I just discovered it a month or so ago and was glued to the screen a few days ago when a Thanksgiving day marathon was on. I think Jon is fantastic and the show is great. From the episodes that ran in the marathon, I didn't notice a lot of Swingers references. Most of the references were to "Rocky Marciano." I did get sick of hearing about that one. But Swingers I don't mind so much, I suppose if I hear it another 100 times, I'll get pissed too.

Question: Was anyone else "scared" in the episode with Vince Vaughn, Rory Cochrane, Brian Cox, and (I forget who the fourth person was)? I thought Rory was gonna jump up and kick Vince's ass. They were getting pretty heated there!

Re: the episode with Rory Cochrane and Vince Vaughn. I think they were just playing around. Apparently they just do stuff like that. If you notice, the rest of the people at the table are laughing, like they know they're just playing around. And immediatly after Rory pounds his fist on the table, Vince says something that makes Rory laugh.

Yeah, I know Rory played it off as a joke, but I think he was seriously defensive. Maybe he wasn't that well aquainted with Brian Cox and Cole Hauser(remembered the fourth person!) and didn't want his personal biz out in the open.

I liked Swingers, but I wasn't over the moon for it. That said, I don't mind Favreau bringing it up. I don't really get the impression he's doing it to pat himself on the back; I think it's more his "go-to" independent filmmaking experience. And it was a huge turning point in his career, so it makes sense that he would reference it. Actually, I think Favreau comes off as extremely likeable, but then my pre-Dinner for Five impression of him was that drunk bloated guy from PCU. So I guess it's hard for there not to be some improvement *chuckle*

reply

Why the f shouldn't he mention it? The movie made him a star. It catapulted him into what he does now. I would talk about it til people's ears were bleeding if I was him.

Also, that's what the show is ABOUT. It's about bringing people onto the show who are in the business, and have them tell stories and share experiences. His biggest movie experiences were Swingers, Made, and Rudy. So that's what he's going to talk about.

I've only seen the first season on DVD, so I can't comment on how annoying it might get to hear him keep talking about those movies. But who cares? Think about it. Adam Goldberg was on episode 7 or 8, and really all he's done that was big was Saving Private Ryan and Dazed and Confused. So hearing a couple of small stories is fine and acceptable. But think about if he was in every episode. Do you not think that those two movies would come up quite a bit? Of course.

Really, Favreau talks about the same things and in the same manner as other guests do. The only difference is, other guests aren't in EVERY episode. Which is why it seems like he's obsessing with Swingers and Made.

Honestly, I've not seen Swingers or Made, and I saw Rudy in a middle school science class (for one of those lazy-teacher days), but his stories about those movies don't bother me. It's rare that you get to hear about the struggle it takes to make smaller movies. Which is why I'm glad that, atleast for the first season, he had on a lot of b-list actors. Rather than A-listers coming on and talking about their new 125 million-grossing box office movie, we get to hear about the making of movies by people that actually care about the movie.

And, either way, whether Swingers is "that great" or not, who cares? I mean, really. He had a dream. He wanted to get that movie made. He succeeded. What we think of the movie doesn't really matter (like Jennifer Beals said, "I don't really care if my movies get released or not. I just love the making of it.").

"Is this a joke? Because if it is, it's both funny and well-executed."

reply

Yeah, I know Rory played it off as a joke, but I think he was seriously defensive. Maybe he wasn't that well aquainted with Brian Cox and Cole Hauser(remembered the fourth person!) and didn't want his personal biz out in the open.

He was a bit defensive, but I don't think he was honestly too angry. I get the impression that his anger was mainly based on the fact that Vince brings up the same story over and over again and Rory is sick and tired of talking about it.

Cole Hauser and Rory Cochrane are really good friends and have been since Dazed and Confused, so I doubt that had anything to do with it. Maybe Brian Cox though, I dunno....

Woody Allen would be another good side bet. Nearly episode I've watched has had some mention of him.

reply

The premise of the show is 5 people from a certain industry have dinner and talk shop. With a resume as short as Favreaus, he will inevitably end up talking about Swingers more than once. Give the guy a break.

^^^^^(The Big Empty)

By the way, Swingers was the 5th greatest movie of all time, with the 3rd best dialogue of all time so Favreau has the right to mention it as he pleases. HE is the uber man of the century. How can you not love the subtleties of that movie. The more you watches, the more jokes you get and the greater the dialogue gets.

Greatest Movies of All Time:
1. Reservoir Dogs
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Shawshank Redemption
4. Eraserhead
5. Swingers
