for what it's worth (and this may prove not to be terribly helpful to you!), the film is showing wednesday evening 25 january from 11.55 pm on australia's multicultural free-to-air tv network, SBS. know anyone in australia who can make a copy for you?
cheers,
seb

Thanks, seb101, for the heads up.
I've recorded it tonight, direct to DVD from the SBS free-to-air analogue signal. The image is quite clear in a letterboxed format with English subtitles by SBS. I'll offer a copy to xfilmjunkiex.

Hello Diana555.Nice to meet you.I'm Jeriel from Sydney,Australia also.I didnt get to watch the film on SBS though last Wednesday because I was so busy working overnight shift. So yeah umm is there any chances also that I could have some copy aswell?I will buy it from you if you want or just send you a blank DVD.Just let me know thanks.Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again
shareI have never in my life seen a more stirring movie.
I am dying to get a copy. Anybody from Australia know of anywhere that may sell it?? I am going to try Dymocks or any ABC/SBS shops. I dont particularly trust the internet and my credit card. We have a great DVD shop here in Queensland so I' am going to order it in hopefully.
I cried my heart out from start to finish when it was on SBS. I flicked past late at night on SBS right before going to bed and though I'd already missed the first half hour or so i was so captivated I did not move for the whole duration.
Was anybody else affected like me??
hello. i saw this film twice. the first time was at the cinema, and i loved it. it blew my mind, i was shocked and thrilled and it stirred so many emotions. then i decided to buy it on dvd (i live in france, so that wasn't too hard) but when i watched it again
#1 there was an interview with the director and i hated the guy
#2 i suddenly had a very hard time watching it
so i just returned it to the shop. so yes i was affected, yes it is a film that shakes you and cannot leave you indifferent, but i wouldn't watch it again. and i'm very surprised you managed to watch this film if you live in australia! hardly anyone watched it in france whe it was released.
Unfortunately the film was not relased on dvd or on vhs.
The only way to see it is on TV SBS show it about once a year.
Unfortunatly for everyone in Australia or anyone else that has access to the SBS broadcasts, I am unhappy to report that SBS has now concluded its Airing of Les Diables, reaching the end of thier copyright agreement. The last offical broadcast was Thur 1st JUN 2006. Anyone who made a copy is now my best friend.
shareHello,
I saw this movie in Eindhoven Netherlands in a theater in 2003. Have been searching for the DVD eversince. I bought it one minute ago on Ebay. But only with France subtitle zo I have to rip the DVD and download the English subtitle and burn the DVD again...
There were two English DVD's on Ebay, but I was to late on bidding, they went away for 33 British Pound..
Good Luck,
Lucas
Hi. I have the English version with English subtitles, happy to pass on if you want to email me [email protected] Its a retail copy with the making of stuff etc
shareJust now you can find two copies on eBay. The edition is subtitled in English.
Two copies are not enough for all of us. But you can announce your wish on eBay: WANT IT NOW (WIN) - then the chance is no small.
Sorry to say so, but I think that the French enterprise made a correct assessment of the market, when they decided to produce a small quantity of this DVD edition. Look how few user comments and how few votes this movie has got. And compare this with the figures for many other movies.
When "Les diables" was shown in Stockholm (I think thrice in the theatre) within a series of new French films, it did not attract many spectators.
I did find an Internet marketing message in Chinese combining the plot summary with an excellent user comment. Considering the size of the Chinese population, even if a very tiny fraction would be interested, a limited edition could soon be sold out.
Now, I think that "Les Diables" is the best film made so far during the present century. I am a real enthusiast.
Taste is very different for different generations. Highly emotional movies are not as much liked as they were 50 years ago. (And sorry to admit it: I am 73 years old.) However, I am absolutely convinced that, if this movie had been released in 1950 or 1960, it would have been a world sensation and also an enormous box office success.

The commercial release is currently available from Amazon France (www.amazon.fr/gp/offer-listing/B000ICMG8Y/ref=dp_olp_2?ie=UTF8&coliid=I36WMAF65QG4XP&colid=1HAI0SOWBHEZC). I bought a new copy for EUR 4,99 + postage - it has English subtitles and plays all regions in the PAL format.
It has better definition than the version I recorded from the digital TV broadcast in Australia, but I'd like to compare the subtitles because the SBS subtitlers do an outstanding job.
Di.
I know this is a little late, but Amazon has links to sellers that carry the official release dvd. I think it is a good quality transfer and the subtitles are pretty good. I really enjoyed this film, it had a great, engrossing story. Working in the social work field makes watching this film difficult because these things really happen, maybe not all at the same time to the same person, but they do happen in ways very close to the film's depiction.
