Did they ever explain why those two hooked up in season 2?

Small community so they found each other compatible. And now with Lucy out of the picture it may just work again but would seem forced.

She was living at Ray's when he got out of jail, Lucy was banging randy at the time, and it was early during the show's development and the writers obviously weren't sure what direction they wanted to go regarding Ricky and Sarah. Now it's obvious but then they were having fun and playing around with character development
