Why didn't David have appreciation for the severance pay package that he was given?

This is something that I have never really understood - although I am unclear on the exact amount he was being paid by the company, it is heavily implied that it was certainly a juicey amount he was being given; at the end of the second season, why does he beg to stay onboard while being given a high amount of coin while departing from Wernham Hogg?

My guess is that it was a combination of the indignity, humiliation, rejection etc of being dismissed like that, and the fact that what he thought was the safety net of the motivational speeches gig had just fallen through - without either that or his job at Wernham Hogg, he had no identity or purpose.
