People blaming the woman and condoning rape

Please let them be trolls. I can't believe some men still think rape is hot and "she was asking for it". Those who think so don't understand Noé's work at all.

I'm sorry but I must disagree. I see nothing sexy in Irreversible's rape scene. It's too brutal and ugly.

I agree with your notion that "she was asking for it" is a disgusting antiquated way of thinking and that rapists are the lowest form of scum. And I would take what paradroid says with a huge grain of salt. He seems to have a thing for rape quite clearly from how much he obsesses about it on this board and seeks it out in every film he watches. But I dont think you can look at this scene in a strictly black and white way. And I dont think Noe had that intent. The concept that sexual domination is a hard wired kink or at least a secret turn on to a lot of people (even females) is just a fact. Its part of our evolution. And I think Noe filmed this scene playing on this fact. I was left both turned on and ashamed by the fact I was turned on and I think Noe wanted us to face that hypocrisy and to help us clearly see the duality that exists in the "normal" world that we generally pretend isnt there. There is a beast within us all and we pretend there isnt. He further adds depth to the scene by having the faceless figure see whats going on and turn around and leave without helping. Again a lot of us are forced to identify with this faceless person because they fear they would do the same (despite all the big talk they may do online). So the scene wasnt just about "RAPE IS TERRIBLE!" to me. And this comment isnt about the trolls who just want to lie on the internet to shock people. Its about the best of us with the worst of human instincts. It forces us to look in that mirror.

I agree that we're all capable of monstrous and violent acts. Pierre is an example of that. But few women, who do not have a rape fetish or are disturbed would find such scenes arousing. I admit I have been turned on by BDSM scenarios and rough sex scenes in some occasions, but always between consenting adults and nothing that would go too far. I draw the line at a certain point, you see.
A Serbian Movie, for instance, as much as I praise it for its cinematography and screenplay, was too hard to watch.
This comes from a horror/gore buff.

I'm a man who likes a good sex scene and no one does sexy better than Monica Bellucci, but there's nothing sexy about a woman being brutalized. So, while the rape scene was quite effective, it was anything but sexy.

Not sure why anyone would believe this movie was glorifying rape. Not a single thing in this film indicates the violence to be a perverse stance by the director.

Still, Noe has spoke about this. He obviously doesn't condone rape, he does state the need to take precautions to help avoid situations such as these.

reply

Yes, he is showing without glamourising anything.
We are supposed to feel sick about the gory scenes.

Yes. It can be avoided if rapists stay home.
