Pretty tame compared to A Serbian Film..

Just finished watching it, after sitting through A Serbian Film, and I was pretty disappointed by Irreversible.

The only entertaining scene was the rape scene but other than that, it was pretty tame compared to what Serbian Film has shown. Actually, even Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is more disturbing than Irreversible. The only thing disturbing in Irreversible (more than rape scene) was the terrible camera-work as inspired by a kid with Polio.

The point is, if you haven't seen both of these movies, watch Serbian film after watching Irreversible, because nothing will shock you afterwards. So this post is a warning to people who watch such movies.

Anyway, too much hype, did not reach the expectations.

I've watched the serbian film last year. Most of the controversial scenes play out for the shock factor alone. Disturbing to watch, but does not carry much of an emotional punch. But I could apreciate it's somewhat satyric undertones, and I felt like it's a social commentary towards a typical ex-soviet satelite state (I also grew up in one).

This movie, on the other hand, has a better crafted narrative and performances. And it takes it's time to get us under the character's skin more, but also succeeds better at creating unease and tension in a more grounded, realistic way.

But I don't watch movies because of the gore-factor, I even applaud the rare great one where no one even dies.

I wasn't emotionally interested in a single character in Irreversible.

In Serbian film at least they spent first half of the movie showing the relationship between the family, it felt more human until the whole shock and horror commences. Especially the kid asking about sex/masturbation and all was pretty funny and human moment between father and son (considering what happens later).

In Irreversible, the movie starts backwards and then more you see, you hate the guys (the "good" guys) and then at the end another "emotional" attempt by implying that Monica was pregnant (which doesn't make sense in many ways).. but director forgot that her getting hit in the stomach or being in coma means nothing if she JUST got pregnant, there is no child to lose.

The ONLY thing Irreversible was trying to do was to shock people with rape scene and they succeeded (unless you've seen other such movies, then you won't be shocked despite it being brutal).

Like I said, average over-hyped movie. I was very disappointed after waiting so long to see it.

"The only entertaining scene was the rape scene"

Wow... Just wow.

People do everything, at any price just to get off for a second these days. It's like they are trying to get into your skin every damn second. I pity those.

Imbecile.

Hey you're the one who finds enjoyment in simulated rape scenes.

Says the imbecile.

Why is that surprising to you? That's all this movie is known for is that scene. This isn't even a good movie and Noe is a complete hack except for 'void'

Irreversible is not as shocking, but it is much darker than A Serbian Film.

reply

How is it much darker?

Irreversible
- A woman gets brutally raped. Later we find out, she was probably.. kinda.. maybe.. pregnant?

Serbian Film
- An ex-porn star with a happy family life, unknowingly rapes real women thinking it's just for show.
- Drugged, ends up raping his own wife and his young son. Ends up killing people, including his own brother who planned it all so he could rape porn star's wife.
- Family destroyed. In the end, their only way out is to kill themselves.

I found both films to be ridiculous and wanted them to end soon after they started. A Serbian Film was cheesy and unrealistic. This one was just violent and backwards with lots of gay hate and annoying, repetitive dialog.

Haha, a guy whose girlfriend is brutally raped by a bisexual man isn't going to act politically correct.

But yeah, most of it was just stupid with sh*t camera work trying to be artsy.

A movie, like A Serbian Film play purely on crappy shock value under the guise of some idiotic "political message."

Irreversible blow ASF out of the god damn water with its pure emotional impact alone, disturbing scenes of not. It's like comparing Ewe Boll to Stanley Kubrick.

They bought a house.

You classify 'rape' as entertainment do you. I'm lost for words.

Most films are tame compared to A Serbian Film, but these 2 films are not even comparable other than the fact they are both french...
