Does anyone know exactly what year in the 80s this took place? How old are Beth and Debbie?

I forget what I based it on, but some reference in the movie made me think they are around 26 or 27.

That explains it, I guess.
I know quite a few people who went hysterically blind that month of that year... :)

Beth & Debby are around 26. You find this out when Debby's mother is talking about how she's been working at the same place for 11 years, and that she promised herself when she started working there that she would save up 1 day's worth of tips every week. She says she didn't end up doing that the 1st year, because Debby needed a new coat. She mentions that Debby was 15 at the time, so: 15 + 11 years = 26 years old...
