saddest scene

I really love this movie and the scenes where Debbie would go up and talk to Rick at the bar were painful to watch because i felt embarassed for her. It was just so sad to see that she didn't "get it". I think Rick wasn't a total jerk because he never offended her or screamed at her, he just responded to her properly especially in the last scene at the bar where she hangs on to him and he lets her hug him. I think he knew that she was really desperate and wanted love but he obviously didn't feel the same.

Anyway, the saddest scene was when Debbie asked the bar tender "what is wrong with me?". That was just so sad; her asking as if she wasn't good enough for a guy to like her. She had problems but that's just sad.

I think anyone who is attractive yet single and tired of going to clubs/bars can relate to how Debbie feels. But she also should've known better than to expect to find love at a dirty bar like that. She supposedly would get really dressed up and with a full face of makeup and big hair to go to the bar when she actually looked better without makeup and the big hair.

I think one of the saddest scenes was when the mums boyfriend died it wasnt that sad but i had tears in my eyes, but i also agree with you about Debbie going and talking to Rik and how she danced by him and slowly got closer to him but you could tell he wasnt interested in anything serious i felt really bad for her and when Rik didnt show up for dinner that was sad too i had a feeling he wouldnt though. Strange movie though

Many many sad scenes in this movie, and after giving it some though, I decided that Rick WAS a big jerk! Not for blowing her off, but he NEVER was really interested in her. So, what does he do???? After she "happens to run into him" in the bar again, he blows her off, then says to her, "You wanna get laid tonight?" and she is like, "Yea, I'm up for it", then he says, "I'll get you when I am ready". Up until that point, he seemed like an okay guy. How demeaning. Debbie realizes how horrible this was because after she agreed, and Rick walks off, you can see it all over her face, as if to say, "I can't believe I just agreed to get laid by someone who does not even want to talk to me!"

Debbie was a jerk too, for not "getting it", but it was easy to feel sorry for her...knowing how her dad left her and how she would wait for him with a packed suit case and all as a kid.

All the sad parts you all mentioned are quite sad. For some reason, I get teary after she leaves the bar, after that embarrassing scene with Rick, goes home and crawls into bed crying with her mom. I guess it was a more bittersweet scene than sad...here, a young woman that has hit rock bottom, and the mom that she was frequently belittling, there to comfort her "little girl" no matter what.

She's not a jerk, she's an insecure, not-too-smart girl with a massive Daddy complex. She's very pathetic. Why would she still want a guy who stood her up and doesn't even realize it? Why wouldn't she confront him? At least have some pride in your patheticness.

Hard to watch.
