I remember those girls in the 80's

The movie was set in 1987. I was 20 years old that year... and let me tell you.. those 2 characters in the movie were EXACTLY how girls were at the hole in the wall bars. They would get "dressed up" every night and hit the same old bar as last night and think they were going to meet the man the would marry. NO CLUE to the fact that the guys were only out to get laid.
I never understood girls like that and I am so embarrassed for them.
I am embarrassed for the girls in the movie and just watching it makes me squirm for wish for their pride to come swooping in.

I was not one of those 'rock girls' in the bars looking for love. In the 80's, I was 'new wave/alternative' listening to New Order, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, etc... and when I went to bars, it was with my friends to get drunk, stupid and dance.

I can say 100% truthfully, I NEVER went home with a guy I met at a bar. Never.

Okay, on to my point... I DO love this movie and here is why....

The actors got it dead on and were terrific. And it kind of let me in a little to where they were coming from. Since I was not like them and my friends were not like them, this movie allowed me to see what they would say to rationalize their actions or what they were thinking.

They are so extremely desperate and I agree with another poster about the ending not being a cop out by putting Debby with Rick, because in real life, they would of NOT ended up together. What happened is exactly what would of happened.

I love your story and I completely agree with you. This film is a realistic masterpiece!

I was one of those girls, but also like you into new wave (I was 22) down to the giant hairspray in the purse. This movie was so realistic, it's a shame it hasn't been seen by more people.

This movie really really affected me, I just saw it now. I tend to have a snooty, snobby, reserved persona & I sometimes find myself judgmental of people, specially girls like these. But watching this film made me empathize & see them for more than my judgments or their facade or my impressions. This is one of a very select few films that have made me cry, I knew of a girl like this in school. We were polar opposites & everyone made fun of her, calling her a slut & more, & this film made me realize the insensitivity & cruelty of people who just don't understand nor empathize.

I agree. Women going to bars to sleep with men they meet hoping it leads to relationships doesn't work. It never works. Meat markets such as clubs and bars are just that. Meat markets. You're not going to meet your future husband in a place where you sleep with him 4 hrs after meeting him.
