What was up with Juliette Lewis's Daughter?

Was she suppose to be slow or something? or clinically depressed at a young age?

She appears like 11 years old trying to be a cheerleader to "Girls Just want to have Fun"

Then when her mom and Uma go out drinking you see her wave goodbye sorta smiling that her mom is going to go out and have fun, maybe find a new daddy? But then as the audience you realize she's probably home by herself until her mom comes back all wasted. Seems like a very sad situation....

No, she's not slow at all. Amber Autumn is an intelligent kid that's really lonely. There's more backstory in the play.

No fruitcake, I meant the character, not the actual girl playing her.. Yea you say there is more back-story? It didn't come through in the movie? What is it?

I was talking about the character. Amber Autumn is a bright kid, more mature than most her age but she's lonely because her Grandparents moved to Florida, her Dad isn't in her life, and she spends a lot of time alone.
She's similar to Deb in the way that all she wants is someone to pay attention to her.

Yea.. that's what I was saying.. she appeared too lonely.. Sad for her to spend a lot of time alone while her mom is our bar hopping.

Couldn't put my finger on it but something about the character Amber Autumn seemed a little off to me also..... Didn't know this movies was adapted from a play.

Kids who are treated like they are invisible very often begin to believe they are invisible. Her behavior was spot-on for that of a neglected kid who has gotten used to her efforts to speak up being fruitless.

Only at the end does she get any attention, and she milks it. Good for her.And for the record-- eleven year olds sure do pretend to be cheerleaders. Heck, six year olds pretend to be cheerleaders. Why is that strange?
