What do you think happened?
Whenever I see an episode with Kagome going back to her own time I always think about where all the demons are. So I was just wondering what everyone thinks happened to them all.

shareThey all fell in a plot-hole along with a lot of other things in the series. Or the author didn't care to explain because it wouldn't make sense if she did. I'm going to go with both reasons.
I've learned that with Inuyasha it's best to just let your suspension of disbelief flow, without restrictions, or you wouldn't be able to enjoy the series otherwise.
Yeah thats what i've been doing was just curious what everyone else thought :P. Me and my friend used to joke that Kagome hit her head when she fell in the well and everything she sees is in her head.
shareMy assumption is that as humans became more numerous and more powerful thanks to advances in technology etc, they were able to force the youkai into either extinction or hiding.

I think it was a result of a paradoxical effect of Kagome having gone back in time. Being the reincarnation of a very powerful Miko (maybe even more powerful than Midoriko, but that's pure speculation), she's one hell of a force to be reckoned with. Coupled with Inuyasha's strength and courage, Miroku's wisdom and cunning, Sango's tactical prowess and knowledge of demonology, and the rest of her vast reservoir of resources, she (possibly inadvertently and/or indirectly) brought about the end of the entire demonic age. This, however, is not explored in the storyline.
One possible outcome is that one (or more) of her offspring might have inherited both the spiritual powers of Kagome and Inuyasha's sheer strength and demonic powers (let's face it, they are GONNA have kids), creating a nearly unstoppable force (like in the case of Wyatt Halliwell for those of you who followed Charmed back in the day). This scenario would have ended with Kagome and Inuyasha's descendants having completely annihilated the demon world, and as they went and had their own offspring, their blood would become "tainted" and "diluted," with centuries serving as a major solvent of their immense spiritual and demonic strength, resulting in their own powers diminishing.
Or, another scenario is that the Christian Crusades reached even to the Far East, totally annihilating every way of life in its wake, even taking all of the demons with them.
Just kidding.
I like to think the former is what happened in those 500 years between Inuyasha's native time and Kagome's home era.
