The sacred jewel

Does it have a purpose? Demons want to steal it, it causes trouble and can make demons even more powerful, so why keep it around? It's obviously not that important if Kikyo would just give it to InuYasha, or if they destroyed it along with her body after she died. So, what's the point of the jewel? Why does it even exist? It doesn't make sense.

(I watched this series when I was a lot younger and am rewatching it, if this is ever explained I don't remember.)

Okay, so you have this jewel that demons keep trying to steal so they can become even more powerful, it must be protected because it's sacred and it's so important that you can give it away, or destroy after the priestess dies? Huh? Is this like a plot hole, or something because I don't get it.

It's sort of like when the wind tunnel is open:

"Watch out, don't suck in the shards!"

...well...why the hell NOT!?!?! Just destroy the damned thing and be DONE with it, lol!

Destroy even ONE tiny shard, and suddenly Naraku can't complete the whole thing...and on top of that, he'd feel like a total moron for allowing it to happen ONLY because of something HE did.
