it was pretty oridinary. I liked the concept and the animation but the characters are just plain annoying. I was thinking about giving the series another chance but this time read the manga. Would that be the way to go? Is it better?

the manga and the anime are pretty similar IMO. there are some filler eps though. and they cut a lot of the filler for the final arc.
i actually think the inukag moments are so much sweeter in the anime as opposed to the manga where i get "comfortable friendship/kinship" type of feels. the manga is less sappy. they kind of changed kikyo's character making her more "evil-ish" in the anime in the manga she's not as cold and can be sweet. i dislike kagome in both versions. she's immature and sort of clueless which makes her annoying.
i never totally finished the manga though, i read religiously up to volume 22 and then got bored and skipped a lot of volumes till the ending ones. i got bored of the same plot lines/twists getting repeated over and over again, rumiko's action scenes are so so and her wacky humor wasn't as present as in ranma or other works.
