Why is sesshomuru the way he is?

Both his parents seem to be nice people. His dad was honorable, loved humans, and everybody adored him unless they were a villain. The man is practically a garysue. His mom is snarky, but kind in her own way. So how did they have a child that's so evil. Well before his morality pet Rin came along, and even with her he's not exactly a good person. Now he's just a cold anti-hero.

I like Sessy. I'm just curious as to why he's so cold and cruel when his parents, and even his half brother, are not. What kind of childhood did he have? Did the author ever say why he's like he is? His childhood couldn't have been that terrible considering his parents.

His mother isn't exactly all sunshine and rainbows. She doesn't have much empathy for humans; she asks him if he's bringing Rin and Kohaku along as a snack, and doesn't understand the fuss that Sesshoumaru makes over Rin, even if she accommodates him out of maternal affection. She also doesn't think to warn Sesshoumaru that if he goes into the meidou he'll die, and huffs that she doesn't care what happens to him when he refuses to take the way out she offers.

Basically I think his mother had more influence on him than his father, leading to his lack of empathy for others.

Sesshomaru is very powerful and is aware of it, hence he feels superior (or he knows he is superior) to almost everybody and to talk to people is needless for him. He's beyond feelings and contacts, he's like a Hollywood star!

And yet, despite of his lack of verbal communication with others around him, his actions indeed spell out some degree of compassion for others, do they not?

In fact, according to Totosai, the manifestation of the Bakusaiga and the return of his left arm are telltale of his maturity as an individual, having evolved into one who indeed does have compassion, though not overtly so.

The key word there being "evolved" - it was something that he developed over time, mostly thanks to Rin's influence, not an aspect of his personality that was there all along but which we just didn't see. I'm sure the kernel of it was there to start with, but it was very small and well-buried until the combination of Tenseiga and Rin started giving him cause to listen to and exercise his better nature.

They never really told much about Sesshomaru's childhood because I would like to know as well. Both InuYasha and Sesshomaru at the beginning of the manga acted the same. Cocky, conceited, superior to others which is proablly why they but heads all the time. Even though Kagome made InuYasha a better person he always think he is better than his opponents(even though he is) but you know...So he pretty much still acts the same but not as much..

Inuyasha is his younger brother. Sesshomuru's mother is still alive. That means his father left him and his mother to live with a human. So while Sesshomuru was growing up, his father was spending all his time around his new wife and half-breed kid.

I think it's a combination of jealousy and being mad at his father for leaving. The father's dead now, so the only one he can take it out on is his half-brother.

But that's just a guess...

[Just because you said so doesn't make it true - the opposite applies to me, of course]

He's very, very proud and originally hates the fact that he got an inferior sword (which at that point he has NO use for) while his half-brother with a "weak" human mother got the kick-ass sword.

He despises that InuYasha got his life pretty well smurfed up (no matter who the fault ultimately lies with) by getting involved with humans.

I'm not sure if there's a similar television or manga storyline, but there's at least one movie plot-line where InuYasha and tetsuaiga could have made a difference in something important, had InuYasha not been pinned to the tree at the time.

I think it was pretty obvious that he was pretty influenced by his mother. I don't know what you were seeing, but she wasn't especially kind, no more than Sesshoumaru is. He's stoic, but he's not evil. I get the feeling that you've misunderstood his character.

Humans have feelings but Sesshomuru isn't a human.
