My thoughts on the ending

I just finally finished Inuyasha (including The Final Act) after going through it for several months. Wonderful series and I absolutely love it. But I felt like the ending, great though it was, still left a bit to be desired.

I was hoping that, in the end, Inuyasha would finally become a full human as he had promised to do for Kikyo in the past. Perhaps even go to live in Kagome's world, of course having to learn to live not only as a human but as a modern human in the process (which, incidentally, has the potential to be extremely funny, as most of Inuyasha's visits to the modern world were). But the ending came just a bit short of this.

Yes, the jewel finally disappeared, Naraku was defeated, and Kagome somehow managed to continue traveling between the worlds (presumably spending most of her time in the Sengoku period and only periodically visiting the modern world), and Inuyasha and Kagome did end up together. But Inuyasha is still a half-demon, still caught between being a demon and being a human. Also, being a half-demon, he's either going to live forever or at least far longer than a human does. Which means he'll probably outlive Kagome by decades if not centuries. Kagome will grow old and die and Inuyasha will still have a long time left to live, alone. What kind of resolution is that? I was really hoping that, in the end, Inuyasha would have to choose between being a demon and being a human, and stop trying to live with one foot in each world. I hoped he would become a human.

But it seems like, despite Inuyasha being the title character of the series, it's only Kagome whose story was really satisfactorily resolved. Inuyasha is still caught between worlds in the end. Maybe he's happy being a half-demon for now, but he won't be after some decades when Kagome grows old while he's still young. He should have become a human so he could live with her properly, age with her and die with her. Instead, once Kagome is gone, Inuyasha will be back at square 1, back to where he was before he met Kikyo. Less confused, less immature, less focused on his demon side at the expense of his human side, but still alone. Miroku and Sango will eventually be gone too so he won't have his other friends anymore either.

So anyway, those are my thoughts. Love the show, like the ending, but I just feel that it falls short in a way, in that things were resolved for Kagome but not completely for Inuyasha.

I don't really like parts of the ending. It is extremely rushed. Even though they never really mentioned it, we're supposed to assume that the Bone Eating Well stopped working after Kagome was able to reactivate it to return to the Feudal Era. And that InuYasha easily outlived Kagome and his new human friends, almost resulting in him alone yet again. This ending is quite hollow.

I think the ending worked overall, but I wish it weren't so rushed.

The part that annoyed me the most was Sango/Miroku. She's this mighty demon slayer and then she all of a sudden she's having back to back babies with Miroku, that disappointed me even though I saw it coming.

I also wish they would've elaborated if Kagome still visited home after she chose to marry Inuyasha. I would hope so. I wasn't too bothered by Inuyasha still being a half demon and outliving her.

I liked Rin living with Kaede too, and Sesshomaru still visiting her. That was sweet. (Though I disagree with the alarming amount of people that think Sesshomaru is going to court Rin eventually. Ew)

The ending to the Inuyasha anime is almost word for word the same as the manga. Unfortunately this is very typical for manga, the author tries to keep the series going for as long as possible but once the publishers decide to end it they are given a very short number of issues to wrap it up.

If he had done that, it would have undermined one of the main reasons his relationship with Kagome was so "the one." She accepted him for who he was. Kikyo wanted him to be human, but Kagome accepted him completely. Reminds me of the ending of Shallow Hal...if you haven't seen it, I'm sorry to spoil it for you. The hoodoo wears off and Hal ends up with the fat version of Paltrow. The director said that people felt that Hal should have gotten the magic mojo back so that all he saw was the skinny/hot version but said that would be "cheating" as the message of the relationship was that he loved and accepted who she was. I do think Kagome will die, but Inuyasha will never be alone. He has a family now with Sango, Miroku, and all the others...one that is growing every day...and perhaps will have children of his own. It's already been proven that demonic origins do not prevent conception. One day he'll be reunited with Kagome and Kikyo again (I like to think that their souls eventually merge), but why give up decades of love for fear of losing someone?
