Just saw the film last night and loved it a few wquaestions of my own
When he went into the house and was looking a the negatives was that like him that knocked on the door... he did the same thing ring the bell then knock then go, his outline looked the same with his pointy nose and big jacket.
Also if the cop was also him (schizophrenic theory) ... then did the cops family not exhist his wife and son... was the cop having an affair with tuttoras wife ??? did they meet when they were on holiday the year before then hook up over the road?
also was there some weird mirror image going on with everything in this film the way that they had a son that was the same age that tuttoras son would have been (ish) (tuttora remebered his wife being pregnant, or at least taking the test) and they both had a blonde sexy wifeand wrked in like law (kinda) and the whole 305 503 room numbers... or am looking too hard into it.
Someone also suggested that, that really was his wife (the one married to the cop) and she ran off with cop she had an affair and got pregnant?
hmmm too many loose ends cant be as simple as - there was this cop that went to assasinate another corrupt cop, got the wrong person totturo hunted and killed then the other cops covered it up.
i dont get it help.
"right now i see further than most, i sit here content with my cheese on toast..."
The easy way for the ones who likes movies that shows just what you need:
<< there was this cop that went to assasinate ..... >>
And this was a very boring movie.
And you the hard way, much more interresting:
<< When he went into the house ... was that like him that knocked on the door >>
I forgot this one and I suppose you're right.
<< Also if the cop was also him >>
I don't think they're related, Peter is just the bad guy made by all pictures he took at the mall, he was created to explain him why.
<< they had a son that was the same age >>
He's the imaginary son the Harry would had with his wife.
All this is schizo, created by the murder of his wife, the DEA agent's death (not corrupted I guess), the cop's questioning about a misterious past of his wife and his quest to find out what happened.
While there are shades of Secret Window and Mulholland Drive in this film, I belive the writers created the story to let US as viewers choose which scenario we believed. I myself go for the realism aspect as the schizo one is lame considering so many films have gone there lately. (Note the 2 above).
First of all...
The cops showed Turturro a picture of the killer. He vaguely recalled him being a neighbor of his. Since he was completely in "find my wife's killer" mode, he went to the house. He snuck in. He found some negatives of the family they had left behind. (People DO leave stuff behind when they move and they had not rented the place out yet anyhow. The bad cop could have come back later to look for things he left. It was not TOO long after the killing and he had a lot to focus on besides what he might have forgotten and had probably taken all that he thought or found might possibly incriminate him when the family moved out).
So Turturro finds the pictures, studies them and goes on a quest to find the wife of the man he is not pretty sure shot his wife.
Later on when the bad cop finds out Turturro is looking for him and he goes to his "partners" in the "kill the bad cop" room, you can tell that they were telling the bad cop to FOCUS on his job and basically get rid of anything in his way. The bad cop then starts to feel bad about what he did. I believe he went to meet Turturro, intending to kill him, but chickened out. Turturro may very well have gone back into that room and killed the cop after he was shot (but we do not know for sure). If he did, then it was cleaned up by the bad cop's partners. OR maybe the bad cop just let Turturro THINK he was dead and then perhaps disappeared into a new life. All in all, I believed this was the way it was until the very last scenes where he did not ask the cops at the hospital to go and find the lady again...since the one from the restaurant OBVIOUSLY had been the one to get in touch with the family in the first place. But he may very well have been close with the bad cop (thus a bad cop himself) and said, "I never saw this guy before...he never gave me a description of a lady. There is no picture." etc. etc. But if it were me I would have gone right back to that restaurant, found that waitress and asked her to be a witness for me. Then he could get a good private investigator to help him out because obviously in the towns he was in in this film, you could not trust ANY COPS! So I guess, not explaining at the end left the movie hang for me. It made it more interesting. But would there be any point to the film if he was schizophrenic?
Does anyone else agree that there was no intent of mental illness to this film? Shelly
Dissapointingly I have come to the conclusion he is schizophrenic.
Was he in the hospital because of a gun shot wound? Nothing after him being shot was made clear. Then he is driven out into what seems to be the middle of nowhere, at which point he enters his vehicle never to return (releasing all of his images into the wind).
The positioning of his car, the lack of detail, all it tells me he is that he is imagining most or all of what has happened.
I still maintain my original theory: no schizophrenia, no mental illness, this: he killed Peter in an act of revenge / rage. By killing Peter (who was a loose cannon in the conspiracy, and could crack the whole thing open and make life sh__ for the police department, Harry actually tied up the loose end, which lead to his "release" from the town. The cops had no reason to keep him now that the cover-up had been complete, and Harry could just go on with his life.
Although I think it's a good one. How could the police be sure that Harry was going to kill Peter and tie up the "loose end"? And on top of that, couldn't Peter tell Harry all about the conspiracy before dying, making Harry a lingering loose end? The police had no way of knowing Harry was oblivious to the "conspiracy".
Well, I don't think the police knew Harry would kill Peter, but jumped on the opportunity to let the conspiracy cover itself up when news of Peter's death came to surface.
Even if Peter did tell Harry what the conspiracy was about, no one would believe Harry since the case was cold and unsolved. Also, I'll bet that if Peter lived and did tell Harry about the conspiracy, the police would probably eliminate Peter and send Harry packing knowing no one would believe him since he would be the only one with no one to corroborate the story.
