Nothing could more clearer than FEAR X. Caine knew all along that the man in 503 was the killer. His wife was killed by accident when that cop went to track down and assasinate another cop from the same force who was perhaps corrupt and knew to much about his colleagues. But I wonder why Caine's wife went over to the house across from theirs. Did Caine's wife know the woman (played by Unger)??? Did Caine's wife have a shady past? Perhaps Caine's wife met someone at that town and he rented the house to have an affair with Caine's wife. Why was the house rented by a corporation? Remember, Caine and his wife had gone to that town he went to. He gave the guy every ounce of understanding but all the guy could do was shoot him. Caine's compassion turned to righteous indignation and rage and he went and murdered the cop. The cops in that town decided to cover it up and see if Caine would go for it. He did. Remember, the hotel was a hotbed of corruption itself. The hotel clerk told Caine that he could provide various forms of entertainment and the prostitute did show up. So it's no mystery that the cops went and destroyed or altered the surveillance tapes.
