'Little blood suckers' comment

What was the deal with the clerk in the store in Alaska telling Leo about rubbing motor oil on her exposed skin to repel "little blood suckers"? It seemed to a refrence to the aliens, but there was no mention anywhere else in the story about them having any vampire-like tendencies

Mosquitoes...

She said mosquitos, but seemed to be referring to the aliens. Why else would she start a conversation with Leo about mosquitos at that point?

Maybe the nosebleeds along with the general fear and suspicion of the townsfolk stirred up the misinformed notion that they were vampires.

Welcome to Costco, I love you...
