... let Sally and her family live? When he showed up at her doorstep and said, "He's gone, isn't he?", obviously her family had knowledge of John. So why didn't he kill them - the way the film implied he killed the Scoutmaster and the two young boys? It just seemed out of character, given the fact that he killed the ones that could later talk about the aliens - like the one who found the translator and the Scoutmaster. Obviously, had he killed them, we'd have no movie, but then I think they shouldn't have implied that he killed the Scoutmaster and the two young boys.

Maybe he was afraid Sally had mentioned John to other people & if she & her family turned up dead, it might arouse suspicion. Sue was portrayed as kind of a "men in uniform" groupie, so her murder may have had several suspects. When he killed Ann & Howard, he arranged it to point to Marty, & maybe the military disposed of the scoutmaster & the boy's bodies & they were never found. He was by himself when he went to Sally's

Sue and the scouts and their dad could provide tangible evidence of what they had seen. Had he gotten hold of John, you could be sure he would have killed them to protect what he attained.
