I saw an episode of this on tv years ago and liked it,recently got the dvds second hand but it is a hard watch because I get confused by the plot and the fact that the characters look similar.
Am I the only person who finds it a bit long and complicated?

There are several characters with military haircuts and several women who look similar.
Are you trying to say that all white people look the same?
It's not confusing. It's all about three families and that runs throughout the mini-series:
* Crawfords: military and obsessed with finding the truth
* Clarkes: family containing human-alien hybrids
* Keys: family of reoccurring abductee victims
