Bad acting or 'goof character'?

Mat Frewer's acting was bad or his character was too goofy.
Anwyay, it was very anoying.

Chet was suppose to be an obnoxious jerk & Matt Frewer played it perfectly. I thought he was funny, but I understand why Charlie punched him and why General Beers wanted to

He was my favorite character, besides Heather Donahue - the most wicked and evil pair I have ever seen. His gleeful malevolence was a joy to behold. He didn't have to wear a black hat to know he was a bad guy. In some ways he reminded me of Jack Elam, who also played a bad guy with such elan.

I thought he was extremely annoying in his first few episodes, cackling like a hyenia at nothing. Later in the series he was more of a wise-cracking, sarcastic wise ass and kind of grew on me.

reply

His best line was in bed with Mary Crawford - "I have been wanting to do this since you turned thirteen" and she smiled. Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy!

I just can't stand his idiotic Jim Carrey impressions in this series.

How many of you believe in telekinesis? Raise my hands.

reply

That's how he's always talked. Ever considered that Jim Carey is imitating him?

reply

He doesn't talk like that in real life, it's just the character he portrays here, which is full of Jim Carrey antics.

He's talked like that in everything I've ever seen him on. Including the bonus disc of TAKEN when being asked if he believes there is life on other planets

He was supposed to be an eccentric character to add some humour to proceedings, in case critics accused the enterprise of getting too po-faced about something quite 'out-there'. I think the character worked and he could play serious scenes when needed. I don't think he was anything like Jim Carrey. A number of highly intelligent people have a whimsical side to them, such as Richard Feynman and his Bongo-playing, topless bars and a habit of rubbing authority figures up the wrong way. It made perfect sense to me. A Good character.

I really liked Chet but it's pretty creepy that he ends up in a relationship with Mary, especially when you watch the series again and you see her as a child.

His character also makes Eric look relatively dimwitted. But that could just be part of Chet's arrogance and asserting his intellectual superiority over him and everyone else.

Chet has a lot of great lines.. "You ever play tic-tac-toe with a chicken"? Love the look the general gave him, just about to punch him, then Chet goes on to explain it. He was arrogant as hell. Both Donahue and Frewer were fantastic in the last few episodes. In the end, I felt bad for Chet, he came around. That last video he recorded, wow.

Seeing this character for the first time my wife said, "Wow he looks just like Max Headroom."
... and of course, he does
