Confused

I always wondered about the use of narration in this show. As far as I ever noticed the only people who got to narrate were Evan and Kelly. Evan narrating made sense in a way because he was a writer and therefore the story could be told from his point of view. But I never understood why we also got commentary from Kelly, although in more of an inner-monologue style than narration. Why did we never get any other character's inner thoughts?

It was quite odd. It sort of makes sense that Evan would narrate but Kelly wasn't even an especially major character.
The other odd thing was Evan's status as omnipresent narrator imbued him with acccess to knowledge that his character couldn't have really known about. Was 'The Secret Life of Us' all one book, that Evan was writing?

reply

Yeah it was, but he was basing it on his mates...i always thought that was the point of the show??

Also, something else confused me. I swear during one series, he said something like "It would be many years before Alex and I would be in a room alone together..." in his narration. Yet within the same series she returned mere months later for a few episodes and they were alone several times.

Wasnt that line about Will, Miranda and Richie? I'm sure it went something like "It would be the last time Sam would ever see the three of them in a room together"......quite a clever line as it was a very obscure hint as to Sams fate without actually giving anything away...

reply

No, there was a line about Alex and Evan not being in a room together for many years. But this is the show that had spoilers going for the second season that one of the main characters would die, and then no one did.
