Hannibal Lecters accent

I notice that Hopkins plays him with varying accents. At times he sounds slightly British and others very American. Why do you think this is? This is his first outing as Hannibal here, so he hasn't developed the character as far as when he did Silence. I wondered if he's trying to make Hannibal look like a changeling, altering his speech to fit his audience. It's part of his manipulation of people.

Serial killers or psychopaths are often said not to really have a personality of their own. They are extremely good at mimicry. Perhaps that's why he changes accents.

But perhaps it also has something to do with Hopkins getting a bit sloppy and older. Everyone has been giving so much praise for his acting in SOTL, he may have kind of forgotten how to play it.

This comes before SOTL no?

In the Hannibal Lecter timeline, yes 'Red Dragon' does come before 'Silence of the Lambs', but the movie came out 11 years after Silence did. Hope this makes sense. :)

Odd that he switched up the accents then. Hes playing a friendlier, more American Lecter here. I wonder why ge chose this direction?
