Why don't the Infected attack each other?

The infected seem to be able to live in groups,without inter-infected violence. Also, while it isn't shown whether they eat and drink, and some clearly starve to death, it would seem that at least hydrating themselves happens, because they would die in less than the normal human 3 days, because they vomit the blood and black bile all the time.

This being the case, if, in fact they can eat and hydrate themselves, and they don't kill each other, and seem to be able to live in groups of mixed sex, as implied by the attack scene at the blockade, they could become a self perpetuating species.

I think maybe the implication is they can eat as long as it doesn't involve higher reasoning to do so. So, the rats that were fleeing from them for instance... if they got their hands on a rat, they could probably eat it. If they see an obvious source of water, they can drink it. If it requires turning a faucet handle to get the water, or it requires opening a package perhaps any more complex than ripping a bag apart... they can't get at food. They could ravage crops but not plant them, clean out grocery stores but only certain food items... etc

That would be my guess. So, this is why they start starving later on, because they use up the easy sources of food and water.

They all starved at the same time. Its been stated nunerous times that they were so enraged, they lost the capability of self preservation which includes eating and drinking. But, that doesn't add up to the scene where they stopped chasing them out the tunnel.

1) The virus appears to do something to their physiology ... the infected soldier at the base had been starved and was still active. However, the film does show the Infected eventually starving to death.

2) They don't attack each other because they can smell when someone is infected and scents like shampoo and soap actually attract them ... this was explained in a really good comic series launched to tie-in with 28 Weeks Later.
