Why was Jim in the hospital ?

...and what was he doing for the past several days\weeks ?

I guess I missed the part where that was explained. The only thing I remember him saying was something like "The last thing I remember was that I was delivering a package" , or something like that. I forget exactly what he said.

reply

Jim was a bicycle courier. While he was delivering something, he got hit by a car. He ended up in a coma and woke up after the outbreak.

reply

ahh, ok.

Was that actually spelled out like that ? I'm trying to determine if I missed dialog or was just unable to put two & two together.

Thanks !

reply

Jim explained the accident when he first met Mark and Selena. He then implied that he was in a coma, which was confirmed later on when they visit Jim's house (his parents' suicide note).

reply

Ok - now I remember their letter said something like "We left you in a sleep and now we are joinging you." (I'm paraphrasing)

Thank you very much failedgmagician. Most people on IMDB these days just give a snub answer like "Didn't you even watch the movie ?!?!?"

thanks

Indeed they do. But those are just very unhappy people who take their jollies in trying to drag everybody else down to their level. Best to ignore any responses of that ilk! I am glad your question was answered. Sometimes even I feel I have to apologise to the world for maybe having missed a snippet of dialogue on IMDb

Welcome to the boards, I have been absent for a while, happy to see new folks joining the discussions

These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them.

reply

well the theory that his parents left him in the hospital(and slid the key beneath door) makes sense
But Why was he naked ?!?!?!

why would anybody leave a recuperating person without any piece of clothing

reply

Good point. He should have been at least attired in a gown.

These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them.

reply

He was probably naked because the doctors didn't know the extent of his damages and had to cut his clothes. Looking at it he was probably bleeding quite severely. He had a huge scar on his head. In the panic, everyone left the hospital, hence he wasn't dressed in a gown.

reply

It's to keep him from overheating and bedsores as it is easy to clean him up.

Uh baby U 4got to pull out. 9 months later, can U pull this ucking baby outta me, do that @ least!

reply

I didn't see this mentioned yet...

On the DVD under deleted scenes, there's one entitled "Hospital Dream" where the cycling accident plays out.

reply

You are my density.

reply

Someone saved his life by locking his hospital room and slipped the key beneath the door. It may be his parents because in their note, they said they left him "sleeping".

I think Jim was put in an induced coma - for and after his operation - to allow the swelling of his brain to return to its normal size.

His induced coma probably ended when his intravenous feed of barbiturates ran out.

I think his parents assumed Jim would die of starvation during his "sleep", but didn't take the barbiturate issue into account.

reply

What I want to know is how someone who's been in a coma all that time just gets up and runs around like nothing happened to him? Ah if only real life was like the movies!!

reply

In terms of his muscles, I don't think 28 days would be enough time for his muscles to really atrophy too badly.

"You're going to need a bigger boat." - Chief Brody

reply

Agreed - this was a weak plot point... He'd be weak as a kitten from malnutrition and he'd have significant muscle withering Nothing like as bad as Beatrix Kiddo in Kill Bill, but *some effect* which we didn't see..

reply

Near the start, if you watch carefully, you can see that part of his head has been shaved and there are stitches there. So he must have had a head injury.
