The death of the dad

I found the death of the dad really stupid and unnecessary. I mean the soldiers were already there...they were just hiding...if they showed themselfs like 5 seconds earlier then the dad would be alive.

When the dad died I thought who are these stupid soldiers hiding like pussies and why didn't they show themselfs earlier since it was already clear the fugitives werent contaminated. They pissed me off.

The soldiers waited on purpose, hoping one of the men would get infected. Only when the females were in danger did the soldiers act. The whole reason the soldiers were looking for survivors was so they could rape women.
I found his death harrowing and powerful, Brendan Gleeson is the man.

Ah. That makes sense.

Thanks for clearing it up for me !

Yeah I was happily surprised when he showed up in the movie.
His death was very tragic and it was so beutiful that he was strong enough to keep himself from attacking his daughter and just told them to get away.

I liked the father character but was glad he died the way he did. Had he lived to find out the soldiers wanted to rape his daughter he'd have flipped out and they'd probably have beat him to death in front of her or something messed up.

Great point. That would have been an awful scene.

I think it was also a scene the showed the soldiers that Jim was emotional and not straight forward ready to kill Frank, therefore Jim wouldn't be a problem for them defending the Selena and Hannah.

As far as it comes to wanting to rape, I don't believe that is the direct case. They had spent weeks only killing rage diseased bodies and stuck in the manor, led by the major with, under the stress of the end of the world, what he believes is the way to restart.

There is no excuse to rape, obviously, but this film brings up the concept of where did the disease originally come from?

As peoples, not as person, and without patients, humans hear a claim and follow it and believe they are heading in the right direction until they hear a larger claim.

These soldiers have only heard they will restart civilization for weeks and originally they thought it would be done meaningfully, but haven't done anything yet. The problem of lack of patients caused their decision to rape and forgetting the first idea.

Plus they seemed like jerks. Except poor Private Jones.

I don't want to be a jerk but human history has showed us that when there are no bigger entities/authorities, our civilization just crumbles down.

We men could say everything we want but in a situation where there are absolutely no consequences for any wrongdoing, when some people has more power than others (such as weapons and training), it will be just a matter of time for those people to lead.

I mean, let's remember that human rigths, equal gender treatment, voting rights, etc. were concepts that only existed after many, many years of living in a republic/democracy. Yes there were some civilizations that had better treatment for women but overall only lately women are being treated "fairly". And actually that "fairly" is still the resons for thousandths of groups worldwide trying to improve women conditions.

So you want to re-start a civilization when trying to keep the same level of "living conditions", i mean, human rigths and so on, that you had before, and force men just to respect them because that's the way it "should be" with no way to actually enforce it ? sorry, that won't happen. Yes more of us men are "good people" and we "know" we will behave correctly if this happens. But i'm a little doubtfull about what will really happens when it happens.

Remember, we live in a society led by the ones that won the war. And wars don't necessarily are won by the "good guys" but the ones that had the best army. And also, wars are won by the one that break the rules and behaves outside of the pattern.

What i think would really happen ? army guys would take over some girls. And yes, it will happens for many years (assumming no other civilization was left as they thought), in fact for many generations until a sizable group of people can change it.
