Why would Jim's parents commit suicide and leave their son to fend for himself in the hospital?
shareThe outbreak had already begun and rather than wait to be eaten by zombs they chose their own death. Their son was in a coma and they had no way of knowing when or if he would awake. They may have been the ones who locked the door to his hospital room, saving his life.

Others have commented on the parent's actions (or lack thereof), but really when a near apocalypse is occurring around you, who knows how you are going to react.
Perhaps they thought Jim might stand a better chance in the hospital.
It's really not an issue as far as I'm concerned.🐭
