What the heck was with the soldiers hair near the end. All chopped off and uneven? Why didn't he just shave his head?

shareDavis probably suffered from excessive stress or insufficient protein. While the soldiers did have a decent camp, it's not like they were living in a fancy resort. They were getting by with military rations and plundered goods, and we know that some of what they had on hand had already gone bad.
If you already have short-cropped hair to begin with (as with most servicemen), then when it starts falling out, you can't cover it up with a comb-over. It's just there for any and all to see.
