Missing persons notice board

I was going through the trivia and it said:

The shot of the notice board at Piccadilly Circus, with the missing persons fliers, caused some controversy when the film was first released. Some said it was insensitive to what happened in New York after the 9/11 attacks. The film was shot prior to 9/11/01, although it was released afterward. Danny Boyle said he based the shot on a photograph he saw from an earthquake in China. He also said that if he'd made the movie after the 9/11 attacks, he wouldn't have shot that scene.

Why was this considered insensitive? Before you start criticizing I was 11 at the time and live in an entirely different country than the US.

because it reminded oversensitive Americans their own boards they set up after 9/11 like this was done never before anywhere in world... I am glad Fight club was released prior 9/11 otherwise I doubt it would be filmed

reply

It's not that we are oversensitive but at the time I'm sure it would have caused a lot of bad memories and heartache only months later for ones that put them up and maybe never saw their loved ones again after being blown up,set on fire and/or falling thousands of feet to their deaths.

reply

Yes, we are over sensitive. 9/11 was horrible but why should a film face controversy because one shot might cause discomfort and bad memories for Americans?

reply

Good question. Because America is a large market, and it's risky to include it because it might offend such a large number of people?

Seems a bit overkill to me, though.

I love when people say "we". You'll probably explain your way out of your use of that, but no one I know is sensitive enough to have given that scene a second thought.

What about those who lost someone on 9/11?
